TYPES OF ELECTRICAL RESISTORS: A COMPARATIVE TABLE TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT ONE

When talking about types of electrical resistors, the real question is not “how many types of resistors are there”, but which resistor is right for your application. In the industrial sector, in fact, the choice depends on concrete parameters: power to be dissipated (W), ohmic value (Ω), temperature, environment (humidity, dust, vibrations), available space and duty cycle.

In this guide you will find a comparison table of the main types of electrical resistors (enamelled, cemented, corrugated ribbon, armored, wound on a ceramic support and other technical solutions) to quickly orient yourself.

How many types of resistance are there?

  • "Electronic" resistors (small, often SMD) → for low-power boards and circuits

  • Power/industrial resistors → for dissipating energy, braking motors, heating panels, managing loads and harsh conditions

MC RESISTORI works mainly on this second family: industrial resistors and custom solutions.

Comparison table: various types of electric resistors (pros/cons and when to choose them)

1) Enamelled wirewound resistors

What it is: Wound resistor with glass enamel coating.
Strengths:

  • Excellent electrical insulation between the turns (the enamel is a glass coating)

  • Good stability and resistance to high temperatures
When to choose them: when reliability and insulation are required, and in important thermal conditions.
Limitations: in some contexts they may cost more than cemented ones.

✅ 2) Resistori cementati

Cos’è: resistore (spesso avvolto) inglobato in cemento/ceramica.
Punti forti:

✅ 3) Corrugated ribbon resistors

What it is: Resistive element made with tape (not wire), often corrugated to increase surface area.
Strengths:

  • Excellent dissipation (larger surface area)

  • High performance in power applications
When to choose them: when you need to dissipate a lot of heat efficiently, with good thermal margins.
Limitations: requires proper design and installation (spaces/ventilation).

✅ 4) Resistenze corazzate (o “corazzate di potenza”)

What it is: Resistance with a protected structure/context for industrial environments.
Strengths:

  • Suitable for harsh environments (shocks, vibrations, dust)

  • Easy to install in systems and panels
When to choose them: industrial systems, heavy loads, contexts where mechanical protection is required.
Limitations: they may be bulkier than others.

✅ 5) Resistors wound on ceramic support

What it is: Resistive wire wound on ceramic (insulating and stable support).
Strengths:

  • Good temperature resistance

  • Excellent mechanical stability
When to choose them: applications where stability and predictable thermal behavior are important.
Limitations: Depends greatly on assembly and ventilation.

✅ 6) Resistenze anticondensa (per quadri elettrici)

What it is: A resistor designed to gently heat the inside of a panel and prevent condensation.
Strengths:

  • Protects against humidity/condensation

  • Reduces failures and oxidation in electrical panels
When to choose them: electrical cabinets, humid environments, temperature changes.
Limitations: It is not a “power resistor” to dissipate energy, it is a specific use.

✅ 7) Braking resistors (for inverters)

What it is: A resistor that dissipates energy during motor deceleration (dynamic braking).
Strengths:

  • Protects inverters and DC buses from overvoltages

  • Controlled and safe braking
When to choose them: systems with inverters (overhead cranes, elevators, automation, handling).
Limits: must be sized carefully (Ω, W, duty cycle).

How to choose the right resistance: 6 practical questions

  1. What is it for? (braking? continuous dissipation? anti-condensation? load bank?)

  2. Required value (Ω) and tolerance?

  3. Power (W) and above all duty cycle (continuous / impulsive)?

  4. Maximum voltage and insulation constraints?

  5. Environment: Closed enclosure, ventilation, humidity, vibrations, dust?

  6. Space and mounting: dimensions, connections, cables, length, bases?

Common mistakes (that waste time and money)

  • choose only based on Ohm and ignore Watt

  • do not indicate the duty cycle (how much the resistor actually works)

  • mount a “good” resistor in a place where it doesn't breathe → overheats

  • non considerare l’ambiente (umidità e condensa “uccidono” i quadri)

Data checklist for quote

If you want quick advice or a quote, prepare this information (even if only approximately):

  • Application (braking / power / anti-condensation / other)

  • Required Ohmic Value (Ω) or Acceptable Range

  • Rated power (W) and duty cycle

  • Working voltage (V) and any peaks

  • Condizioni ambientali (temperatura, umidità, quadro chiuso/aperto, ventilazione)

  • Maximum available dimensions and type of fixing

  • Cable length / connection type

Characteristics and comparison: types of electrical resistors

Type Descrizione When to choose them Strong points Limitations / Notes
Enamelled resistors
enamelled wirewound resistors
Resistor wound with glass enamel which improves insulation between the turns. Quando servono affidabilità, buon isolamento e stabilità termica. Ottimo isolamento elettrico, buona stabilità, adatte a temperature elevate. In alcuni casi costano più delle cementate.
Cemented resistors
cemented
Robust and general purpose cement/ceramic encapsulated resistor. For standard applications where price and robustness matter. They cost less than enamelled ones and are easy to use. Performance and insulation depend on model and installation.
Corrugated ribbon
ribbon / strip
Ribbon resistive element (not wire), often corrugated to increase the dissipating surface. When you need to dissipate heat efficiently in power applications. Excellent dissipation, good thermal performance. Requires proper ventilation/space and careful design.
Armored resistors
industrial
Resistors with structure/protection designed for harsh industrial environments.
Wound on ceramic support
wirewound on ceramic
Resistive wire wrapped around a stable, insulating ceramic support. Quando serve stabilità termica e meccanica prevedibile. Buona resistenza alle temperature, stabilità e durata. Performance related to assembly and dissipation (ventilation).
Anti-condensation heaters
electrical panels
Resistors for gentle heating of the panel to prevent condensation. Cabinets/pictures in humid environments or with strong temperature changes.
In systems with inverters (handling, overhead cranes, automation). Controlled braking, DC bus protection, safety and efficiency.
